Menomonee Falls resident selected as

first recipient of competive New York Times internship

Released: Feb. 16, 2007

Menomonee Falls resident and Marquette University senior Jacqueline Palank is the first recipient of the New York Times David E. Rosenbaum Internship Award, named after the late reporter and editor in the newspaper’s Washington Bureau.

After Rosenbaum’s death a year ago, The Times and the Washington Press Club Foundation honored his 35-year career by establishing a reporting internship. The prestigious position is awarded to one young reporter who shares Rosenbaum’s passion and expertise in public policy. Jacqueline Palank is the first student to earn the internship award and honor the prize-winning writer, who was particularly skilled at translating obscure government policies into compact digestible stories.

“Rosenbaum is a great role model for my career,” said Palank. “He really exemplified the public service role journalists should play.”

A 2003 alumna of Menomonee Falls High School, Palank will graduate from Marquette University in the spring with degrees in journalism and political science. Her prior Washington experience includes an internship on Capitol Hill last fall in the office of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., which she completed as part of Marquette’s Les Aspin Center for Government semester program, and a reporting internship last summer with the business desk of the Washington Times.

“I’m excited for the mentoring opportunity the internship will provide,” said Palank, “and I’m eager to incorporate the values Marquette has taught me into the position.”

Before working in Washington, Jacqueline served as the managing editor of the student newspaper, The Marquette Tribune, where she covered student government and served as campus news editor. She also worked as a news clerk for The Associated Press in Milwaukee.

“Jackie has taken full advantage of everything the Diederich College of Communication has to offer,” said John Pauly, dean of the at Marquette Diederich College of Communication . “The award reflects Jacqueline’s tremendous ability, and we know she will honor Marquette’s long and important tradition in journalism.”

The ten-week internship will begin in June after a short orientation in New York. Palank will tackle regular reporting assignments, work alongside seasoned journalists and cover issues in Washington.
