Marquette Receives Second Installment
of 3M Grant to Address
Challenges of Outsourcing and the World Economy
Released:
Sept. 12, 2005
Marquette University announced that it has received the second
installment of a $50,000 Vision Grant, awarded by the 3M Foundation,
to develop curriculum aimed at increasing student preparedness
to compete in a world economy marked by outsourcing of U.S.
jobs.
The grant, one of only five awarded to private U.S. colleges
and universities by 3M, was announced last year to be given
over a three year period. It provides necessary funding to
pursue an educational response to the challenges of offshore
outsourcing. Dr. George F. Corliss, of Marquette's College
of Engineering, and Dr. Kate Kaiser and Dr. Monica Adya, of
the College of Business Administration, authored the proposal
for a comprehensive response to the changing landscape of
the business world. This year's installment of the grant will
be geared toward hands-on student participation, including
a three-week course at a Chinese university over Marquette's
winter break.
"3M's Vision Grant allows Marquette to take a proactive
stance in better preparing leaders for tomorrow's world,”
said Dr. Corliss. “By offering a trip to China and exposing
our students to different economy and way of life, we are
giving them an advantage over other students who are graduating
into the emerging world of outsourcing,”
The 3M Vision Grant is designed to foster innovation in private
colleges by supporting new, academically-based initiatives
that connect students with their communities to solve problems.
3M officials were at Marquette to present the second installment
of the award.
In the first year of the grant, Marquette held forums led
by faculty and business leaders geared toward addressing the
changing workforce and how to better prepare students.
