Marquette to Offer Graduate Certificate in
Law Enforcement Leadership and Management

Program will be first of its kind in the area

Released: Nov. 16, 2005

MILWAUKEE- Being a police officer is a tough job. Officers’ oath to protect and serve can place them in situations where their lives, and the lives of those around them, are on the line. In those situations, it’s important that they have a foundation of strong, ethical leadership skills. Marquette University’s College of Professional Studies will offer a program to give law enforcement managers the tools to do just that. Beginning in fall of 2006, Marquette will offer the area’s first graduate certificate in Law Enforcement Leadership and Management.

“This program offers law enforcement officers an opportunity to strengthen their leadership and management skills in order to better serve their departments and their communities while putting themselves in a good position for promotion,” said Jay Caulfield, director of graduate programs for the College of Professional Studies at Marquette.

Most educational programs for law enforcement management are offered at the undergraduate level, but today many officers already have an undergraduate degree. Marquette’s program will offer an opportunity for officers to take the next step in developing their leadership skills and furthering their career.

“Officers completing the graduate certificate program may apply all twelve credits earned to Marquette’s Master’s Degree Program in Public Service with a specialization in Administrative Justice,” Caulfield said.

Applicants must be currently employed as law enforcement officers, have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and three letters of recommendation to qualify for the program. Courses will include the study of policies in policing, legal issues in law enforcement, economics and budgeting of policing and police leadership and ethics.

Marquette’s College of Professional Studies is committed to improving the lives of working adults through a diverse range of ethics-based educational opportunities, including bachelor and masters degrees as well as certificate programs.
