Marquette Welcomes New Dean

Pauly to Head Diederich College of Communication

Released: July 3, 2006

Dr. John J. Pauly, professor of communication at St. Louis University, has been appointed dean of the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University. Pauly begins today at Marquette.

“I have confidence that Dr. Pauly has the expertise, administrative experience, vision and energy to lead the college in accord with its faculty’s aspirations,” Marquette Provost Madeline Wake said. “We are indeed fortunate that he is joining our community.”

Pauly will be responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the college, which will benefit in the coming years from a gift of $28 million from alumni J. William and Mary Diederich. The gift, announced last year, will assist in positioning the college as a national leader in scholarly research, creative work, outreach and teaching as it prepares students for communication in the 21st century.

“The generosity of the Diederich gift will create wonderful opportunities for both students and faculty,” Pauly said. “I am honored to help in such work.”

Pauly specializes in the history and sociology of the mass media, the theory and practice of literary journalism, and cultural approaches to communication research. He was an assistant professor of English at East Carolina University in Greenville in 1978-79 before joining Fordham University in New York as an assistant professor of communication. He came to the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee as an assistant professor of mass communication in 1981 and was promoted to associate professor in 1985 before joining the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma for a year as a visiting associate professor of communication. Pauly joined Tulsa permanently in 1987 before his appointment at St. Louis University in 1993, where he also served as department chair until 2002. While at St. Louis, he also had a secondary appointment as professor of American Studies for five years.

Pauly received a bachelor of science in journalism with honors in 1972 and a master of science in journalism in 1974, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Ph.D. in communication in 1979 from the same institution.

Pauly has made numerous presentations in his fields of interest, published extensively, and served with both academic and professional organizations. He is a member of the editorial board of Journalism Theory, Practice and Criticism and was formerly a board member of Critical Studies in Mass Communication and Journalism Monographs. He also was a director of the American Journalism Historians Association and editor of its quarterly journal. Pauly also held several capacities with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Pauly has served as a writing skills consultant to private businesses, was a technical writer and editor for the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Champaign, served as a press secretary for a primary mayoral candidate in Urbana, and was a drama reviewer for the The Courier in Urbana.

Pauly received a Faculty Excellence Award from the Student Government Association at St. Loius University in spring 2002. In 2003, his colleagues established the John J. Pauly Award for Outstanding Student Achievement to honor a graduating communication major who hopes to put his or her education in the service of democracy through fields such as political journalism, public interest law, government service, community organizing or civil rights advocacy.

Pauly succeeds Dr. Ana C. Garner, who served as interim dean of the college for the 2005-06 academic year after the retirement of Dr. William R. Elliott.
