Marquette University's Athletics Nickname
Survey Results: Conclusions

Please Note: The following conclusions are in no particular order.

Conclusion: Marquette’s athletics nickname, mascot and logo are important to respondents.

Conclusion: The opinions and feelings of alumni are strongly favorable toward the Marquette Warriors. Among students, faculty and staff, there are significant numbers of respondents on both sides of the issue.

Conclusion: The responses of stakeholder groups vary greatly on the question of whether the Warriors nickname is consistent with Marquette’s mission and values. Significantly less than half of the faculty and staff believe the nickname to be consistent with Marquette’s mission and values.

Conclusion: All stakeholder groups had significant majorities that indicated a negative opinion of or a lack of connection with the "Golden Eagles" nickname and mascot, with alumni most likely to not have a favorable connection.

Conclusion: 51% of all respondents say there is a need for an athletics mark and 87% would prefer to use the monogram “MU.”

Conclusion: The feedback process is perceived to be fair and thorough, and Marquette stakeholders say a similar process should have been used in 1994 when the athletics nickname was changed from "Warriors" to "Golden Eagles."

Conclusion: Prior to completing the survey, the majority of alumni were unaware of the resolution passed by the Board of Trustees prohibiting the use of Native American references and imagery in its athletics nickname, logo and mascot. Once aware of the resolution, the majority of all respondents said it does not influence the way they feel about the potential of changing the athletics nickname back to the Warriors.

Conclusion: The majority of respondents were aware that at Commencement in May 2004, Marquette was offered a $2 million donation to consider changing the athletics nickname back to Warriors. However, three-fourths of all respondents feel that the issue of changing the athletics nickname back to the Warriors has nothing to do with money.

Conclusion: The majority of respondents were somewhat open to the possibility of having a non-matching nickname and mascot, but returning to the mascot "Bleuteaux" would not be acceptable to half of the respondents.

Conclusion: If Marquette University were to change its athletics nickname back to Warriors, about one in five respondents agree that it would appear the university was inconsistent or “wishy-washy” or was being “bought.” About one in 10 respondents see the change as a step backwards relative to Marquette’s current goals of promoting diversity.
