Survey Results: Open-ended Questions
In addition to the scaled (or close-ended) questions reported
above, there were four open-ended questions asked in which
respondents were invited to give additional written commentary
on particular questions. In total, these responses generated
more than 2000 pages of written feedback. All responses were
transcribed, and were read and reviewed by Marquette University.
In most cases, the open-ended questions allowed respondents
to affirm and give more detail about the question they had
just answered. In those situations, the essence of that feedback
is captured in the survey data. In many cases, respondents
shared personal stories and memories to illustrate why they
felt a certain way about an issue. The written comments from
alumni in particular often conveyed strong feelings of nostalgia
and communicated a real sense of identity with Marquette University
and its athletic traditions.
The open-ended format also allowed respondents to comment
more broadly on issues related to the nickname/mascot decision.
For example, respondents suggested new nicknames other than “Marquette
Warriors” and “Golden Eagles”, and they shared
feelings about the survey and the feedback process. There were
multiple definitions provided for the word warrior in a non-Native
American context. In many instances, respondents also used
the open-ended format to share their general feelings — usually
positive — about Marquette University.
