Marquette
University Resolution Prohibiting
Native American References and Imagery
in
Athletics Nickname
WHEREAS, Marquette University is committed to the dignity
of all human beings and to the principle that all people should
be afforded basic respect; and
WHEREAS, Marquette University strives to uphold these principles
in all of its activities, including its athletic program and
any manifestation of its identity to people both inside and
outside of Marquette University; and
WHEREAS, Marquette University seeks to maintain and honor
these principles in its selection of an athletics logo, nickname,
and mascot; and
WHEREAS, Marquette University feels that in its athletics
program, Native American logos, nicknames, and mascots are
offensive, disrespectful and demeaning to Native American people;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows:
1. Marquette University shall consistently prohibit the use
of Native American references and imagery in its athletics
logo, nickname, and mascot and shall consistently strive to
avoid the use of images that diminish, limit, stereotype, or
are offensive to the character, history and culture of any
ethnic heritage.
2. Marquette University shall strive to educate its students,
alumni and fans as to the objectionable nature of such references
and imagery.
DULY ADOPTED, by the Board of Trustees, as of this 22nd day
of September, 2004.
