Marquette University's Athletics Nickname
Survey Results: Methodology

  • This study was conducted as an online survey available to stakeholders on the university’s Web site from November 11-28, 2004.

  • Marquette publicized the online survey to students, alumni, faculty and staff through a postcard mailing. The mailing offered a telephone option to people who lacked Internet access. Some questions were not asked of people who opted for the telephone survey due to the lack of visual aids and time constraints.

  • A total of 9,285 surveys were accepted as the final sample for the study. Of this final sample, 9,198 were online surveys and 87 were telephone surveys.

  • 27% or 2,495 are students, 2% or 231 are faculty, 4% or 363 are staff, and 67% or 6,196 are alumni. Comparing this response rate to the overall population of each of these stakeholder groups yields the following response rates for each group:
Students 23%
Faculty 19%
Staff/Administrators 24%
Alumni 7%
  • Advantage Research considers the survey responses adequate for drawing general conclusions about the feelings and perceptions of the respondent populations within each of the respondent populations. However, the responses of respondents in total have not been weighted, and thus are heavily skewed toward alumni.
  • Some respondents raised concerns that the survey was too long and that it did not estimate the amount of time needed to complete it. These issues should be rectified in future surveys of this type. Some respondents also indicated that three particular questions were problematic: specifically, two questions were confusing (the use of personal items bearing the historic Marquette Warriors logo and the importance of a winning athletic program), and the inability to differentiate between mascots used in different eras was problematic in answering the question of whether historic mascots were offensive. As a result of the concerns raised, these three questions were not considered in the overall survey analysis.
