Statements from Wayne Sanders
Vice Chair, Marquette University Board of Trustees
May 4, 2005
"From
the beginning, my intention was only to put the idea of a name
change on the table for discussion. For the past 10 years,
I listened to many alumni, students, and fans who, like me, wanted
to know if it was possible for Marquette to return to the Warriors
nickname in an honorable way that would not offend anyone. As
a Trustee, I’ve participated in the process the Board established
last September, and like many, have given this issue a great
deal of thought and consideration. While this began as a discussion
about an athletics nickname, it evolved into a re-examination
of who we are as members of the Marquette community and what
we value as an educational institution. I truly believe
in Marquette University and all it represents. As such,
I join my fellow Trustees in fully supporting today’s decision."

"This is an issue that has been important to many in the Marquette community
for the past 10 years. My intention was only to put the idea of a name
change on the table for discussion. I respect Father Wild’s decision to
decline the donation, and agree that this issue is not about money. Now
the decision is in hands of the full Board of Trustees, and we’ll
see where this conversation leads us."
