April 28 - The team arrived back in Milwaukee early Monday morning after a long 15 hour drive home. The team was glad to be back at Marquette and continues to work on the far fixing the issues raised while in Virginia. April 23-26 - SAE VIR!!! The itinerary for SAE VIR is as follows and is subject to change frequently: 4/22 - Leave Milwaukee for Virginia at about 4:00 pm (15 hours, Google Maps) 4/23 - Arrive at VIR, register, Tech inspection 4/24 - Static Events (Design, Cost, Presentation) 4/25 - Skid pad, Acceleration, Autocross Events 4/26 - Endurance/Fuel Economy Event 4/27 - BOSCH Engineering Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series 250 at VIR 4/28 - Leave Virginia, arrive in Milwaukee ** If you are curious about the status of the team at any given time, call any of our members in the "Contact Us" section and we will be happy to inform you of the progress**April 3 - The Milwaukee Chapter of SAE had a meeting at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on 4/3. The meeting allowed Marquette Racing to interact with other SAE teams (UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, MSOE and Michigan Tech) and gain valuable insight. Marquette Racing was the only team presenting a Formula SAE car, a project which gained much interest among those attending. April 2 - The rolling chassis has been completed. While behind schedule, the current status allows sufficient time for the car to be complete for VIR later this month. Powdercoating will be performed at Tankcraft on 4/3, after which the final assembly was completed. March 30 - Several sponsors offered vital resources for Marquette Racing in the recent past. Four complicated uprights needed to be machined and bearings pressed in, a task completed by Astro Craft in record turn-around time. Marquette Racing would like to thank Astro Craft for their generous donation and quick response time. March 26 - Marquette Racing team members have been busy building the car. Much work needs to be completed before the competition in April, yet the team remains optimistic. Check the Multimedia section for the most up to date pictures of the progress March 20 - After hearing about Marquette Racing concern about driving the current Engineering truck (a 1996 Ford F-250) to Virginia and California later this year, Schlossmann's Honda City has donated a new truck for the team to use for the competitions. Marquette Racing would like to extend its gratitude to Honda City for their donation on resources. Photos of the truck/trailer should be available after the competition in April. March 11 - More photos have been uploaded to the website. These include pictures of the components which we have bought to this point, pictures of the frame build and finally pictures of the frame/body/engine all together. Also, the videos which were made unavailable when the website was redesigned are now available again. March 10 - The shifter and steering wheel have arrived. This year the team has decided to use a pneumatic shifting device which allows for no-lift shifts. Therefore only a two pedal setup is needed as clutch operation is automatic once a steering wheel mounted shift levers is activated. Not only will this new system allow for more efficient and quicker shifts, but also eliminate the mechanical linkage problems which the team encountered last year. March 3 - The suspension has begun to be manufactured and attached to the body. A-arms, rockers, hubs, uprights, tie rods and pushrods are all manufactured for being manufactured. A entirely different, more sophisticated, suspension geometry is being tested this year. This system included push rods and rockers to connect the dampers to the upright. This is in start contract to the direct linkage of last years car. March 1 - The cost report, design report and spec sheet for SAE VIR were successfully handed in before the March 1st deadline. Stark improvements were make to each document compared to last year. April 1 is the deadline for the SAW West competition for the cost report, April 15 for the design report and spec sheet. Marquette Racing Business team is continually working on all documents for SAE West. March 1 - The body mock up is now complete and has been removed from the mold. This year the Body/Aerodynamics team used Kevlar with reinforcing fiberglass to achieve body performance preciously unseen at Marquette Racing. March 1 - Marquette University College of Engineering held an alumni event at the Hyatt Regency downtown in conjunction with the Marquette/Georgetown Men's Basketball game. Marquette Racing was invited to the event, said to be one of the largest in Marquette Engineering Alumni history, to show off the SAE car from last year and this year. It was also an opportunity for Marquette Racing to network with local business and alumni, several of whom expressed interest in the team and its activities. February 22 - Marquette Racing team members met with the Chair of the Department of Engineering, Dr. Kim, who reaffirmed his support for the SAE team at Marquette. Dr. Kim also showed plans for the new Engineering Building, which will include a 5,000 square foot dedicated garage for SAE activities. The team is excited about this new building, set to begin construction in late 2009. February 7 - The engine is now mounted in the frame. Team members worked efficiently to install the engine in the frame as soon as possible. For more pictures of the engine mount, check out the photos section. February 2 - The engine is now functional and running. Over the weekend, several team members continued working on the engine and now have it running rudimentarily. This year the team changed from a carburetor to electronic fuel injection, a much more complicated system. The team is excited to have the engine functioning. January 31 - The frame has been completed and is now at Marquette (it was build at Tankcraft in Darrien WI). The team has been working hard with planning mounting points for suspension and the engine. January 28 - The materials for the all composite body have arrived. A combination of Kevlar and carbon fiber are going to be used for the body this year - in stark contract to the sheet metal body of last year. The body is expected to be completed in early March. January 15 - Slicks from Goodyear and wheels from Volk racing have arrived and are mounted. Two sets of tires are being used this year, in contrast to last years single set. Rain tires will be mounted to one set, slicks to the other. Goodyear generously sponsored Marquette Racing with tire donations this year, opposed to last years purchased Hoosier tires. December 14 - Christmas Break is upon Marquette University, as finals week concludes. Marquette Racing will continue to design and build the formula car over the break. Thank you to all of our sponsors in 2007 and we look forward to working with you in the New Year! December 3 - If you have not checked out our Contact Us Section, there are now photos and contact information for our entire team, including the newest members. December 1 - Marquette Racing has had several new sponsors who we would like to thank: Marquette University Student Government (MUSG), Greenheck Fan, International Supply Co. and an anonymous donor for body and aero work. The Sponsor list on this website is now up to date regarding current sponsors of Marquette Racing. Marquette Racing would like to express their gratitude to Henkel for their generous donation. October 18 - Marquette Racing team members traveled down to Tankcraft to begin building the frame of the 2008 formula car. Final testing has been completed on the drawings and the frame is cleared for production. Chromoly will be used exclusively on the car this year, compared to mild steel, which was used last year. Strength properties, cost analysis and weight advantages make Chromoly a definitave advance in frame technology. October 1 - Marquette Racing has signed up for both the SAE VIR and SAE West Competitions. Complications prevented the team from signing up for the Michigan competition, where we competed last year. SAE VIR is at Virginia International Raceway on April 23-26, 2008. SAE West is at California Speedway in Fontana, CA on June 25-28, 2008. Both events entail the same competition and the same rules, allowing the same car to be used. Marquette Racing is excited about traveling to these new venues next year. Check out http://students.sae.org/competitions/formulaseries/ for more information about these competitions. September 24 - Caterpillar, based out of Peoria, IL, has agreed to sponsor Marquette Racing for the 2007-2008 season at an undisclosed level. Marquette Racing would like to thank Caterpillar for their support. September 15 - Several team members traveled to Tankcraft to build an engine stand for our brand new GSX-R 600 engine. This will allow the engine to be run and tested. This year we are implementing a new engine control module, and much of its tuning will occur on the stand, before the engine is installed in the car. For pictures of the Build, click here. September 5 - Our first meeting with the newest members. O-Fest proved vital in gaining new, younger members for our organization, bringing engineering and non-engineering students to our meeting. For pictures of the new member meeting, click here.
