"Takalama Akhi: Speak Out, Brother!"
This year's Arab Heritage Month theme is Takalama Akhi: Speak Out, Brother! to celebrate the Arab tradition of music, poetry, political voice and protest.
All events are cosponsored with ASA, the Arab Student Association.
Monday, 11/9/09 7 p.m. Dabka Dance and Workshop

Dabka is a traditional Arab group dance originating in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The word dabka means “stomping of the feet.” The dance combines easy and complicated stomping movements. Come and watch Raj’een, the Milwaukee-based Palestinian Dabka group and learn how to dance Dabka as well.

Thursday, 11/12/09 6:30 p.m. Women's Belly Dance Workshop

Join the women of the Arab Student Association and learn how to dance in the Arab way. Great music and a fun atmosphere. Due to cultural custom, however, we can have only women attending this workshop.

Come and taste a wide variety of Arab desserts and learn the customs of Arab tea and coffee drinking as well as general Arab etiquette.

Thursday, 11/19/08 Lunchtime Discussion at Noon, Exhibit All Day Gaza Exhibit

Walk through a series of photos illustrating the devastation of Gaza and the artwork of those living in the region on the Union’s second floor. During lunch, an expert in the current events of Palestine will lead a discussion about the people living in Gaza and the history of the region.

Six Lebanese women who work in a Beirut beauty parlor discover the blessings and hardship of love and friendship. This film investigates questions of family, trust, age and moving on.

The Arab World and the Circle of Faith: A panel discussion.

Facilitated by Ammar Askari, President of Wisconsin’s chapter of the American-Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee (ADC), the largest Arab- American grass roots organization in the United States and a nonsectarian, non-partisan organization committed to defending the rights Arabs and promoting their rich cultural heritage.

Panelists — who will discuss commonalities among Arab Christians, Jewish Arabs, and Arab Muslims; interfaith marriage; discrimination, current interfaith dialogues, and collaboration among Arab groups to combat conflict — include representatives from the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, St. George Melkite Church, and other organizations.

  • Othman M. Atta—former President of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, representative on the Board of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, and alumnus of Marquette University Law School

The Student Leadership Summit is an annual conference open to all students but may be of particular interest to those with campus leadership roles, those who serve the community in some form, or those who aspire to incorporate acts of leadership and service in their daily lives.
