Hometown: Rochester, New York

Interesting fact: I love folding fitted sheets.

Why I serve: My answer has changed a lot in the past few years. Today, I serve because I believe in justice and equality, and a world where human dignity is protected. Service gives us an opportunity to confront injustice together, in solidarity with others. I love the connection that service builds among people- that we’re all together as part of this world in which our essential purpose is to be good to each another.

Talk to me about: Getting involved, reflection, AmeriCorps, service careers, planning a service event, service trips, social justice issues, why you serve- anything!

Why I serve
: I serve because it allows me to enter into the lives of others. I am able to learn about the way people live which leads me to disovering more about my lifestyle and what leads to a more just society. Service connects us all and ultimately I believe it is my mission to give back to a world that has blessed me with so much. It is a gift I can give to the world. I wake up everyday and think: "What can I do today to make a difference?" We are all in this together and even the smallest acts can make a difference.

Favorite thing about Milwaukee/Marquette: I enjoy exploring all that Milwaukee has to offer and meeting new people!

Why I serve: We are so lucky to be able to be located in the amazing city of Milwaukee. The opportunities we have to connect with our community are endless. I continue to grow through each service experience I encounter, and I learn more about my community and myself every day. I’m so happy I attend a university that says we are, “women and men for and with others” because it perfectly describes why I serve.

Program Assistant for the Center for Community Service
Senior, Biochemistry

Hometown: Mundelein, Illinois

Why I serve: Whether it is here in Milwaukee or in a completely different country, I believe it is important for us to take action in addressing the injustices that we witness everyday. Recognizing the issues that exist is one thing, but taking action and deciding to do something about it is another. I think one of the most important aspects of service is the relationships we build, as making a simple connection with someone can have a profound impact. I genuinely believe that there is more that unites us as humans than separates us, and building connections through service is one way to recognize this.
Favorite thing about Milwaukee/Marquette: I love Milwaukee's size: not too big and not too small. To me it's the perfect college city, with plenty of opportunities to take advantage of yet not too overwhelming.

 Valerie

Valerie Asimacopoulos
Program Assistant for the Center for Community Service
Senior, Political Science and Economics

Hometown: Park Ridge, IL

Why I serve: I serve because I believe that every life is of equal value. An individual's worth is not measured by what they have or how much they've done; it's by who they are. I want to let every person know that they are wanted, they are loved, and they are perfect as they are. To me, service is all about connections. It's about people joining together to impact each other's lives. I want to form close relationships with others and I hope that we can help each other grow along the way.

Favorite thing about Milwaukee/Marquette: The people, the food, the music, the lake front, the university where dreams come true-what's not to love?!
