NEWS FOR PARENTS

H1N1 vaccine available to all students

Marquette Student Health Service will hold an H1N1 vaccine clinic in the Alumni Memorial Union this Thursday, Dec. 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The H1N1 vaccine is now available to all members of the Marquette community with an MUID.

The H1N1 vaccine is offered at no cost to individuals on a first-come, first-serve basis. The H1N1 vaccine is also available by appointment; students should call Student Health Service at (414) 288-7184 for more information.

Seasonal flu vaccine is also still available by calling SHS for an appointment. Students receiving the seasonal flu shot before Dec. 11 are still eligible for raffle prizes. The seasonal flu vaccine is $25.

For more information visit the SHS Web site.

Marquette Central opens on campus

Students and parents can now conveniently access a variety of services in the brand new student services building, Zilber Hall. Opened in November, the building brings together the offices of the Bursar, Registrar and Student Financial Aid in a common service center known as “Marquette Central.”

Located on the first floor, Marquette Central will be staffed by members from all three offices that have been crossed-trained to serve students who have questions about enrollment and financial services. Marquette Central will provide walk-in and phone service, (414) 288-4000, for students Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is also located on the ground level, with administrative offices occupying the upper floors of the new building.

Shuttles to train and bus stations for Christmas break

Public Safety will provide shuttles to the Amtrak and Greyhound/Megabus stations for Christmas break. Shuttles will run every hour, on the hour Friday, Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., leaving from the DPS office in the 16th Street parking structure. Starting at 5 p.m., students can request a ride to the Amtrak or bus terminal using the LIMO service, which runs until 3 a.m. LIMO service is also available to bring students back to campus from the train and bus stations, from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., when they arrive back in Milwaukee. LIMO requests are made by calling DPS at (414) 288-6363. No reservation or notice is needed for the hourly shuttle on Friday, Dec. 18. Whether using the shuttle or LIMO service, students should plan ahead as departure and pick-up times cannot be guaranteed.

Vacant House Watch available to off-campus students

Students living off-campus are encouraged to register their properties with DPS for Vacant House Watch while they are away from campus during the holidays. Public Safety officers will discreetly monitor the property periodically during their routine patrols of the neighborhood.

Crime prevention officers will be going door-to-door providing Vacant House Watch forms and home security tips before final exams or students can print and fill out the Vacant House Watch form (PDF) online. Completed forms should be returned to the Public Safety office by Monday, Dec. 21. Students are also encouraged to discontinue mail and newspaper service over extended absences and to activate alarm systems if they are available.

Students leaving their vehicles unattended during break can obtain free on-campus parking while they are gone. After their last exam, students can register their vehicle and obtain a parking pass in the Parking Services office, located in the Wells Street Parking Structure. For additional information call (414) 288-6911.

Your son or daughter has experienced freedom at school, but what happens when you’re all back under the same roof as a family? Watch as Dr. Christopher Miller, vice president for student affairs, offers advice for parents about re-negotiating rules and setting expectations for your child’s time at home over winter break. Miller also urges parents to check in with students about how things are really going at school, while helping them to reflect on the experience they are having thus far.
