Public Safety offers home security information

Finding your first home or apartment after living in residence halls can be exciting. First-time renters have many things to consider, including location, proximity to campus, the cost and condition of any potential residence. The security of a new home is just as important. Fortunately, the Department of Public Safety offers free programs and services to provide students with home safety and security information. Public Safety’s crime prevention officers are available to conduct home security surveys, which include written reports on areas of concern and home security tips. For more information, students can visit the Public Safety Web site; call (414) 288-6800; or visit the Public Safety office at 749 N. 16th St., on the first level of the 16th Street Parking Structure.

Marquette names new provost

Dr. John Pauly, dean of Marquette’s J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, will start as Marquette University provost in July. Pauly was appointed dean and the William R. Burleigh and E.W. Scripps Professor in the Diederich College of Communication in 2006, and he previously taught at St. Louis University, University of Tulsa, UW-Milwaukee, Fordham University and East Carolina University. “Dr. Pauly brings a strong academic and administrative background to the provost position,” said President Robert Wild, S.J. “As Marquette’s chief academic officer, he will drive our continued commitment to excellence — in the recruitment of faculty with national reputations, in the development of programs and partnerships that enrich the learning of our students and enhance economic and social development in the Milwaukee region, and in helping to build endowments to support first-class teaching and research and financial aid for our students.”

Pauly will succeed Dr. Madeline Wake, who left the position in December 2007 to return to faculty status. Dr. David Shrock, past dean of the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Management, has served as interim provost since December.

Marquette president meets with Pope
Pope Benedict XVI met last week with about 400 Catholic educators, including Marquette President Robert Wild, S.J., at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. The Pope affirmed the role of Catholic higher education and encouraged educators to continue living out their mission and identity. The New York Times quoted Father Wild’s reaction to the address. “What was most striking to me is what it was not. We were not being told that most Catholic schools are not faithful to our message. It was not a finger-waving exercise. It was mostly to encourage us,” Father Wild said.

Students getting new one-stop shop

This summer Marquette will tear down the 1212 Building to make room for a new student services building at the corner of 12th and Wisconsin. The new space will bring the Undergraduate Admissions, Registrar, Bursar and Financial Aid offices under the same roof for the first time, making it much easier for students to take care of school-related business. The new building, which will also house administrative offices, is scheduled to open during the 2009-2010 school year.

Cleaning up hunger

Nearly 1,700 students, faculty and staff participated in this year’s Hunger Clean-Up, a proud Marquette tradition and the university’s largest one-day service project. Participants go throughout the city to volunteer at homeless shelters, schools and community organizations and also collect donations to help local agencies fight hunger. Soon-to-be graduates can also battle hunger through this year’s Senior Service Project on May 13, which will benefit the Hunger Task Force. Learn about more about available Marquette service opportunities.
