University Apartments offer a safe, affordable living space

Now is the time for sophomores and juniors to think about where to sign a lease for the 2009-2010 school year. University Apartments offers one, two and three-bedroom options in five safe and convenient living communities on or close to campus and nearby amenities.  All university apartment buildings feature 24-hour building surveillance and security desks. Front desks at the three largest apartment buildings (Campus Town East and West and Humphrey Hall) are staffed 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. On-campus and on-call professional staff members are available to respond to emergency situations at any time of the day or night.

Students can sign a lease for a semester, academic year or full year, and are able to pay rent directly to their university Bursar account. New to the 2009-2010 leasing periods, University Apartments has decreased rent for all two and three bedrooms apartments by 15%. Students will also be able to lock in the current year’s lease rate when a second year renewal lease is signed. All apartments include wireless internet access and basic cable, and some apartments are completely or partially furnished. Recent renovations to University Apartments include new carpeting, refinished furniture and new elevators and community spaces within certain buildings.

To reserve a space, a $200 deposit is required; deposits, which are credited to the student’s first month rent, are accepted beginning Oct. 20. Sign up times vary in early November. For more information, visit the University Apartments Web site or call 414-288-7281.

Campus Ministry programs offered

In the midst of a full academic and social calendar, Campus Ministry offers a plethora of opportunities for your student to pause, reflect and find God. This year, the Campus Ministry office will sponsor four “First-year Experience” retreats geared towards first-year students, as well as other retreats focused on Ignatian Spirituality. The office also offers ways for students to remain on campus and deepen their faith life through weekly prayer opportunities, discussions around various social justice topics, and volunteer opportunities.

This October marks the 20th anniversary of Midnight Run, an organization that provides food and friendship for people in the community. For more information, please see our Web site.

Bicycle security information

With gas prices on the rise, more students are riding bicycles around campus. It is a good time to remember the following bicycle security tips, as there have been several incidents of bicycle theft involving unsecured bicycles or those secured with inefficient locks. To prevent theft, bicycle owners are reminded of the following:

• Always secure your bicycle with effective locking devices. High security locks are available for $20 from the Parking Services office.
• The City of Milwaukee requires that all bicycles are licensed. Free licensing decals can be obtained from the Parking Services office. Non-licensed bicycles are subject to a $63 fine.
• Secure bicycles to fixed objects, such as permanent bicycle racks that are cemented or anchored into the ground. Avoid securing bicycles to trees, or to any object that can be removed or broken. On campus, bicycle parking is allowed in designated areas only.
• Secure bicycles in well-traveled, well-lit areas.
• Consider engraving a personal identification number or message on your bicycle. Electric engravers can be borrowed from Public Safety.

Those in need of long-term bicycle storage are encouraged to utilize the secured Bike Corral, located in the basement of the 16th Street Parking Structure. Bicycles must be registered with Parking Services prior to gaining access to the Bike Corral. Once inside the corral, all bicycles must be secured using a high security lock. Bicycle owners may also consider taking their bikes home for the winter months.

For more information, contact Public Safety at 414-288-6800.

Career Services Center provides help for job seekers

Is your son or daughter in need of some career guidance? The Career Services Center can help students and alumni throughout all stages of the career development process.

MU Career Manager is a career management tool available to Marquette students and alumni. The system allows users to search job, internship and co-op postings as well as view who will be coming to career fairs and having on-campus interviews. Students and alumni can also post resumes to be viewed by employers and research various companies. Accounts can be set up through the Career Services Web site. The Career Services Center can help your son or daughter set up an account and learn to navigate the program’s many features. Encourage your student to stop by the center during walk-in hours, weekdays from 12 – 2 p.m., or to call 414-288-7423 to make an appointment.

Each year more than 200 employers visit our center for on-campus interviewing. First semester interviews are conducted in October and November. Encourage your student to log on to MU Career Manager to check out who is coming and set up an interview.

Interviewing can be a stressful time for students. Encourage them to set up a mock interview with a career counselor to practice interview skills and learn helpful tips for the interview process.

Learn more ways to help your student explore careers at the Career Services Center’s parents’ Web site .
