The History of Philosophy major seeks to give students a solid grounding in fundamental issues in the main areas of philosophical investigation, through exploring the main philosophical strategies that have been employed within Western philosophical tradition. Hence the History of Philosophy major is not primarily a series of courses in history as such. We study the works of the greatest philosophers, and consider their responses to one another, in order to follow their lead in our own philosophical investigations, and to understand the roots of our intellectual traditions. The Social Philosophy major seeks to give students an especially solid grounding in philosophical discussions concerning the nature of community, law, government, and culture, and to investigate contemporary concerns in social theory and ethics in the light those historical and contemporary philosophical discussions especially recognized for their profundity and influence. Major: History of Philosophy 2 core courses + Logic + Metaphysics + 3 courses on the History of Philosophy + 3 Philosophy Electives Major: Social Philosophy 2 core courses + Logic + 1 course in either Contemporary Ethical Problems or Business Ethics or Medical Ethics or Health care Ethics + 3 courses among: Metaphysics/Theory of Knowledge and Social and Applied Philosophy Courses (Philosophy of the State, Philosophy of Law and Philosophy of Community) + 3 Philosophy Electives NB: With the approval of the Assistant Chair equivalent courses may be substituted for the required courses. Details concerning the requirements for each of our majors, as well as requirements for the Philosophy minor, can be found at http://www.marquette.edu/pages/home/resourcecommons/bulletin |
