Mission Statement

The President is Marquette’s chief executive officer, reporting directly to the Board of Trustees. With the background provided by the listening sessions and online forms, and discussions over a period of several months, the Board of Trustees determined that the 23rd President of Marquette University should have the following desired qualifications. Items in bold are considered requirements, while all other statements should be viewed as strong preferences.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship
  • Commitment to and ability to articulate Catholic, Jesuit identity in higher education
  • Understanding and appreciation for academic life
  • Knowledge of current trends and challenges in higher education and their implications for the university
  • Commitment to undergraduate, graduate and professional education
  • Demonstrated commitment to the dual missions of sustaining excellent, highly competitive academic programs and ensuring access to higher education

LEADERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated success as a religious leader and as a visionary, proactive academic leader
  • Ability to build a strong management team, delegate authority and devise appropriate administrative structures
  • Courage to make difficult decisions in an environment with competing demands
  • Proven track record of working in a collaborative manner with a board, faculty and other key stakeholders
  • Visible and accessible to all stakeholders
  • Energetic leadership in sustaining a strong public presence for Marquette in local, state, national and global forums

PROFESSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Member of the Society of Jesus
  • Academic credentials in teaching and research/scholarship
  • Ability to inspire all stakeholders to support Marquette with their time, treasure and skills through fundraising and the formation of entrepreneurial partnerships
  • Experience in leading a complex organization, including the ability to bring various constituencies to agreement
  • Demonstrated success as an executive, including fiscal management and development of a management team that is results-driven
  • Commitment to attracting and retaining a highly qualified and diverse faculty, staff and student body
  • Appreciation for the significance of a national athletic program to the overall image and success of the institution
