Marquette is a national leader in providing academic opportunity to first-generation college students, students from under-represented groups or ethnicities and students from low-income families.
That commitment is shown through our Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), a federally funded TRIO program which motivates and enables low-income and first generation students, whose parents do not have a baccalaureate degree, to enter and succeed in higher education.
Upward Bound
Upward Bound is a pre-college program prepares high school students to enter and successfully complete college. It accepts young people from either low-income families or from families where the parents do not have college degrees. It offers specialized classes, tutorials, college placement assistance, career development labs, personal counseling and social/cultural activities and trips.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the Upward Bound office at (414) 288-7368 during the fall semester of their eighth grade year.
Student Support Services
Eligible students, who show potential for success at Marquette, and enrolled at Marquette and provided with a network of supportive services, financial aid assistance, a pre-enrollment summer program, academic counseling, specialized courses, seminars, tutoring and educational and career counseling.
Upward Bound Math Science
The mission of Marquette's SAMM program (Science and Mathematics at Marquette) is to assist and educate students who are low-income and whose parents do not have bachelor's degrees achieve their goal of becoming a college graduate in a math, science, or technology field.
Students are recruited from the Milwaukee area in their freshman year of high school and receive specialized math, science, writing, and technology classes, as well as tutorials, college placement assistance, career development, personal counseling and immersion in social/cultural activities and trips. The program features a summer component, where students stay on campus for six weeks each summer, and a school-year component.
Ronald E. McNair
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program prepares eligible students for graduate school.
During the academic year, students attend monthly seminars, meet visiting scholars, and participate in student and professional conferences. The McNair Director is also available to provide specialized academic advising, admissions and financial aid application assistance.
During the summer, McNair students may apply to participate in SOAR, a paid research internship which provides an in-depth research experience, working one-on-one with a faculty mentor, and the opportunity to network with other undergraduates from across the nation.
To be eligible for The McNair Program, participants must be low-income students whose parents do not have an undergraduate degree or African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.
