Youth Empowered to Succeed Mentors and YES students

For Parents

Your child's health and fitness were evaluated at the beginning of the YES program and they were given a fitness and wellness prescription. Now with fitness classes provided by the United Community Center and your help, your child can work toward the goals of their health program. Classes offered at the UCC include a strength and endurance training class that incorporates a full body workout with a wide variety of exercises in timed intervals.

Tips for workout encouragement:

  • Saying 'Get up and do something!' often ends up achieving the opposite effect. Try leading by example. If your child sees you enjoying physical activity and having fun, it will motivate them to be more active.
  • Encourage your child to try a variety of activities so they find ones they enjoy and want to continue.
  • Recognize your child's achievements. Offer active rewards if they attend an activity regularly and achieves their goals.

For Students

Now that you have your fitness and wellness prescription, it's time to get started! You and your friends can sign up for classes like the Jumping into Plyometrics class at the United Community Center offered on Mondays from 4:00-5:00 pm. The class focuses on strength and endurance for a full body workout with a variety of exercises in timed intervals. When you are not going to exercise classes, it's easy to fit fitness and healthy eating into your day.

You can fit in 45-60 minutes of activity daily by:

  • Riding your bike
  • Playing sports with your friends
  • Walking around your neighborhood

Limit the time you spend:

  • Watching TV
  • Playing video games
  • Sitting at the computer
