Father Francis (Tick) Wade (1907 to 1987)was a longtime member of the
Marquette Jesuit Community and Department of Philosophy. He arrived
at Marquette in 1945, and for 40years he became and remained a
favorite teacher and role model. A diligent, well-published, and
student-oriented scholar himself, he supported other faculty while guiding
Marquette’s Department of Philosophy to a position of scholastic renown.
He inspired his students with a love of philosophy and in 1970 he received
the Pere Marquette Award for Teaching Excellence. He also encouraged
men to enter the field of philosophy and higher education, all the while
discerning the proper role of a Jesuit in a university. In 1988, the
University received a gift from the Marquette Jesuit Community
endowing a Chair named in honor of Fr. Wade in recognition of
his contribution to the University and to the Jesuit Community.
