Statutes for the Academic Senate(Officially
Approved August 13, 1976)*
The Academic Senate shall be a deliberative body with
responsibilities for academic policy formulation of an
all-University character and for the review and
evaluation of academic programs and academic planning.
Its conclusions on academic policy, academic planning
and program evaluation will represent the official
collective stance of the area of the Academic Division,
and they will be reported as such by the Provost to the
appropriate higher authorities. Recommendations of the
Academic Senate shall be subject to the approval of the
President and the Trustees.
- Upon request of
the President, the Academic Senate shall evaluate all
new appointments to major administrative positions in
the Academic Area and advise on all such new
appointments.
- The
responsibilities for all executive decisions and
actions within the area of the Academic Division
belong to the Provost.
- The Provost shall
be Chairperson of the Academic Senate. He/she shall
call meetings as needed, and at least once per month
during the academic year, and shall be responsible for
the agenda of such meetings. The designated Vice
Provost shall be Vice Chairperson of the Academic
Senate and shall act as Chairperson in the absence of
the Provost. The designated Vice Provost will have the
right to vote in that capacity only during such time
as he/she chairs the Senate.
- Membership on the
Academic Senate shall consist of the following: the
Provost; the designated Vice Provosts; the Dean of the
Klingler College of Arts and Sciences; five out of the group of
nine which includes the Dean of the College of
Business Administration, the Dean of the Diederich College of
Communication, the Dean of the School of Dentistry,
the Dean of the School of Education, the Dean of the
College of Engineering, the Dean of the College of
Health Sciences, the Dean of the Law School, the Dean
of the College of Nursing, and the Dean of the College
of Professional Studies; one from the group of four
which includes the Dean of the Libraries, the Dean of
Admissions, the Director of Student Financial Aid and
the Registrar; eighteen elected faculty; and three
elected students.
- The five
Senate members who are to be chosen from the group
of nine, including nine collegiate Deans, will be
elected from this group by the members of this group
for one-year terms.
- The one
Senate member who is to be chosen from the group of
four including the Dean of Libraries, the Dean of
Admissions, the Director of Student Financial Aid
and the Registrar will be elected from this group by
the members of this group for a one-year term.
- The
seventeen of the eighteen faculty representatives
shall be elected to the Senate for terms of three
years: three by and from the faculty of the Klingler College
of Arts and Sciences; one by and from the faculty of
each of the eight other colleges and schools having
Regular full-time faculty; and six by and from the
full-time members of the Regular Faculty and
Librarians of the University, electing at large. The
full-time Regular Faculty of each college and
school, shall each organize and supervise the
election of its representative(s), and shall
determine the extent of its electorate. The
Committee on Faculty shall organize and supervise
the University-at-large elections. All full-time
regular Professors, Associate Professors, and
Assistant Professors, and those full-time
participating faculty (including Instructors and
Librarians) who have completed at least
two-and-one-half years of continuous service in rank
at Marquette University, are eligible for election
to the Senate. The Chair of the Committee on Faculty
will also serve, ex-officio, as a voting member of
the Senate.
- Two of the
student members are to be drawn from the full-time
undergraduate student body, and one from the
professional or graduate student body; each shall
serve one-year terms. Any student meeting the normal
University standards of eligibility may be elected.
The extent of the electorate for the undergraduate
students will be determined by the Associated
Students of Marquette University, who shall organize
and supervise the election. The graduate or
professional student shall be selected by a
committee composed of three representatives of each
of the student associations of the Law School, the
Dental School, and the Graduate School, while
nominating representatives may be appointed or
elected by the respective associations in accordance
with their respective bylaws.
The following University boards and committees shall
relate to the Academic Senate, via its Chairperson, as
standing subcommittees of the Senate and advisory to it:
the Board of Undergraduate Studies; the Board of
Graduate Studies; the Library Board; the Financial Aid
Committee; the Committee on Faculty Promotions and
Tenure; and the Committee on Committees and Elections.
The Senate shall create other standing committees and
ad hoc committees as needed.

Revised in 1991 to include the Director of Student
Financial Aid as an eligible voting member.
Revised in 1996 to include the College of Health
Sciences and the new adult college for adult students
which subsumes Continuing Education and Summer
Sessions.
Revised in 1998 to add librarians to those eligible
to serve as at-large representatives on the Senate and
to include the 1997 Recommendations of the Task Force on
Faculty Involvement in Governance which added five
additional faculty (the Chair of the Committee on
Faculty and four new at-large representatives) to the
voting membership, and created the Executive
Committee.
Revised in 2002 to reflect a change in the
University's structure: the Provost and the Vice Provosts
replace the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the
Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Also
revised in 2002 to remove the Academic Area Budget
Committee from the list of committees that shall relate
to the Academic Senate, via its Chairperson, as standing
subcommittees of the Senate and advisory to
