Class Notes Visual & Psychological Passages. Artists and Designers have incorporated passages such as doors and windows in their work for a multitude of reasons- to separate spaces, to set boundaries, to create passageways, to frame an event. Trap doors, hidden panels, gateways, bridges, peepholes, and other versions of doors and windows have been used to suggest concepts such as hospitality, liberation, lost opportunity, and the transition from one place or state of mind to another. Assignments will deal with such concepts and will usually include an image of some type of passageway. Most assignments will be executed with mixed media.

Class Notes Mixed Color Media. Students will execute mixed media works which visually express individually selected concepts. Imaginative invention and expressive use of color and media will be used to achieve a series of complex compositions. Projects will encourage students to recognize the value of discoveries made while engaged in the creative process of working. Students who are enrolled in Mixed Color Media fall semester may not reenroll spring semester!

Class Notes ANIMALS IN ART, LORE, AND FABLE. Animals have appeared in the visual work and folklore of virtually all cultures throughout the ages. Ancient fables depict animals as teachers and models for human behavior. In the legends and artwork of many lands animals appear as sacred beings and possessors of magical abilities and great wisdom. In this studio class students wil explore a variety of similar themes. The nature of the research for the assignments will enable students to examine animal images and texts created by a diverse range of artists and writers. No prerequisite. All FIAR courses are taught at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, 273 East Erie Street.

Class Notes The Body & Material Culture. This course explores the figurative form in its relation to material culture and the human identity. Students interpret the body using a range of materials (alternative and traditional) and examine the meanings these materials invoke. The implications of material meaning, both on a personal and social level, notions of beauty, redirection, and identification and responsiveness to the conditioning of the human body are considered. Students develop ideas through research, material explorations, and an active inquiry into various visual fabrications. Emphasis is placed on collaborative and individual projects. Students will also explore proposal development, working effectively with bureaucracies, practicing a range of documentation techniques, and learning about recent developments in the field by reading some of its important literature.
