Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Administratively, the
IACUC is appointed by and reports to the Dean of the Graduate
School. The Committee recommends general internal policies
and
procedures governing the care and humane treatment of animals
during their use in research and instruction programs.
The Committee
consists of eight members, including four scientists with specific
knowledge and use in the care and treatment of research
animals,
one consulting veterinarian, one university research administrator,
and a member from outside the university community.
The specific responsibilities of the committees are to:
- Conduct a full review of all new protocols involving
vertebrate animals. Protocols that receive annual renewal
for three
subsequent years must be submitted as new protocols
on the third year, and will require full review.
- Review and approve annually all protocols requiring renewal.
- Provide consultation to personnel at all levels regarding
animal care matters.
- Prescribe procedures to be followed for the proper care
and humane treatment of animals consistent with regulatory
agency requirements and institutional policies, and review
such procedures at least semi-annually.
- Make recommendations to correct noncompliance matters.
- Inspect, at least semiannually, the animal quarters on
campus and issue recommendations for protocol change, if
appropriate.
- Supervise the management of all emergency situations
pertaining to animal protocols.
- Maintain records of Committee activity.
- Review Semi-annual Inventory Reports, Annual Operating
Cost Reports and per diem costs.
In addition to the IACUC,
the Graduate Dean also appoints a Director of the Animal Care
Facility. The Director's general responsibility is to insure that
all animals receive proper care and humane treatment consistent
with USDA and NIH requirements as well as Marquette University
policies. S/he serves as a full member of the IACUC.
