Supervisor
of Animal Care Facility
The supervisor reports to the Director of the Animal Care
Facility and is directly responsible for the daily activities
of the facility. The duties are multifaceted and include technical
expertise, supervision responsibilities, interaction with the
United States Department of Agriculture and The National Institutes
of Health, communication with faculty and staff and communication
with individuals and groups outside the University.
The supervisor provides
daily direct supervision of the animal care technicians and
the animal care assistants and is responsible for hiring,
training and evaluation of employees. Animal orders are processed
by the facility supervisor and the appropriate institutional
and federal records are maintained as well as a daily and
monthly inventory of laboratory animals.
The supervisor is responsible
for guiding the USDA inspector on his/her annual inspections
of the Animal Care Facility and must provide the inspector
with the pertinent census and transfer data necessary to complete
the USDA report.
The supervisor works
closely with the facility veterinarian to treat sick animals,
administer medications, and improve animal care. The supervisor
interacts with investigators and research assistants to teach
animal research techniques and to learn the aims and needs
of their research.
