Responsibilities of New and Current Users


All users are expected to read and follow the guidelines described in the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

Additionally, all users are expected to follow institutional guidelines as described herein and established by the IACUC. Copies are available in ORSP.

All users should anticipate unannounced, periodic visits by members of the IACUC to determine if guidelines are being followed by the user in designated animal care facilities.

The principal investigator is responsible for all animals under his/her charge, in accordance with state, federal and university guidelines. The investigator is responsible for maintaining the good healthn be initiated.

The principal investigator is responsible for insuring that personnel who handle animals have received appropriate training before projects begin. Undergraduate students receiving laboratory course credit must be given training in basic animal handling techniques before being exposed to the animals. Others are to be given training commensurate with their status in a project.
