Regulatory Agency Requirements

U.S. Department of Agriculture

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title9, Chapter1, SubchapterA, specifies applicable USDA regulations to assure humane care, treatment and transportation of animals. Copies of this document may be obtained from the Chairman of the IACUC, Director of the Animal Care Facility or the Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

In compliance with USDA requirements, the Marquette University veterinarian, who is also a member of the IACUC, shall conduct inspections of all campus facilities which house animals and make recommendations, as appropriate.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The Office for Protection from Research Risks at the National Institutes of Health establishes applicable guidelines. These are specified in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 1996 . Copies are available from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).

ORSP must make acceptable assurances to NIH before any Public Health Service project awards will be made.
