Dorthy Day Social Justice Community Frequently Asked Questions

Living‐Learning Program FAQ’s

When are applications due?

Priority applications are due February 22, 2019. All applications are due May 10, 2019.

I understand that participants will live together on designated floors in Straz Tower. What if I’m accepted and want to room with someone who is not part of the program?

Only students who are part of the DDSJ program can live on the designated floors. You may have to choose between being part of the program or living elsewhere with your preferred roommate.

If I’m accepted, how do I sign up for housing?

Residence Life will manually assign you on the designated floors. We will have a social in March that will allow you to meet others in the community and potentially find a roommate.

Can I choose my roommate from those participating in the program?

Yes. Simply add to the application who you would like to live with, and be sure that you are listed on the other person’s application.

What if I am currently taking Phil 2310? Does that disqualify me from participation?

You should have taken or be enrolled in PHIL 1001 before the Fall semester begins.

Enrolling in special sections of Phil 2310 and THEO3530 are integral parts of the program, especially considering that both are offered as Service Learning courses. Priority is given to those who have not completed either of these courses.

What Service Sites are generally offered?

It changes from year to year. In 2012/13, students worked in one of the following sites:

  • AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin-Prevention Department
  • Benedict Center
  • Central City Churches
  • International Learning Center
  • Literacy Services
  • Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility
  • Repairers of the Breach

How many hours will I be required to work at my Service Learning site?

Generally three hours per week. You will be paired with at least one other student at the same site, and you’ll work there both fall and spring semesters. Depending on the site there is flexibility at the end of each semester you need 30 hours at your site.

What other service programs will be offered?

Each year, there are a number of service programs that are organized by the RA’s or other students living on the floors/in the building. These are generally one time involvements, including such things as preparing and sharing meals at a homeless shelter. Students also participate in a Fall and Spring retreat that are designed to facilitate relationship building in the community and an opportunity to explore the issues you will be learning about throughout the year.
