Introduction

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) operates a Laboratory Health and Safety Committee. One of the goals of the AIHA Laboratory Health and Safety Committee is to collect and make available a compilation of laboratory safety incidents. These incident summaries may be used by health and safety professionals, faculty, supervisors, students and any others who may benefit from these "lessons learned." Key safety and health teaching concepts/principles for each of the incidents have been summarized.

The incident summaries were obtained from submissions contributed by personnel involved in laboratory health and safety as well as from information posted on listservs or on the internet (with permission). All identifying information has been removed.

These safety summaries can be used by Marquette PIs to provide additional lab safety and health training. All lab safety talks should be documented in the lab’s Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Mission Statement

The Risk Unit is responsible for evaluating loss exposures, assessing liability, handling claims, promoting internal controls and developing effective safety and health programs. The corporate and student insurance plans are managed by this unit.
