Perspective on Cadet Rangers

Whereas Ranger Challenge is the brawns of the Golden Eagle Battalion, I like to consider Cadet Rangers as the brains of the battalion. Though this cadet-run club is university recognized and is open to any of Marquette’s students, what one would find during a typical weekly meeting is a group of highly dedicated cadets seeking to go above and beyond normal ROTC activities. It is a cadet led group, meaning the cadets teach each other, further developing their leadership skills.
The mission of the group is to become a proficient leader in small unit infantry tactics and to excel themselves above their peers through setting a higher standard. Throughout the year, cadets will learn more advanced skills such as Battle Drill techniques, Rope Bridging, Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), Convoy Operations/IED, tactical radio usage, calling in artillery strikes, and foreign customs and courtesies. Cadets are tested on these subject matters and have a curriculum of requirements to qualify as a fulltime member, including a Book Report and a 4 mile Road March with a 35lb Rucksack.
Other training events include Field Training Exercises (FTX) with Situational Training Exercise (STX) Lanes and more compelling events such as Paintballing and Rockclimbing. It takes a full year of participation to qualify and once qualified, those cadets are awarded the Cadet Ranger ribbon and are authorized to wear the Cadet Ranger Tab on their Class A uniform. Those who partake in Cadet Ranger activities better themselves for their future career as officers in the US Army.
