Army ROTC Sports
The Golden Eagle Battalion has numerous opportunities for involvement
in extracurricular sports. Every year Army fields a men’s
team for intramural football. In past years, a Female Volleyball
team has also competed at Marquette. In the Spring Semester, Marquette
sends Male and Female basketball teams to the University of Notre
Dame to compete in a regional ROTC Basketball Tournament. Male
and Female Teams also compete in a Tri-ROTC Football Tournament
at Marquette, competing against teams from Air Force ROTC and
NROTC.

This pass weekend Marquette Army ROTC sent a men’s and women’s team to the Notre Dame ROTC Basketball Tournament. Notre Dame does a tremendous job putting on the tournament and it is well organized and well run. Notre Dame is also a beautiful place to go visit. They have a terrific campus with a lot of history and tradition. For example, Touchdown Jesus, which got its name from being seen in the north end zone of the Notre Dame Football Stadium and the statue of Jesus, looks like he is signaling a touchdown. The men’s team did very well again this year making it to the Final Four and losing the game to get into the championship by 3 to the Champion Texas A&M. We played well with them the whole game and were only down by 2 with a minute left. It came down to free throws which have haunted us the last two years, losing by one last year in the game to get to the championship. This was their second year in a row that they won the tournament. The tournament is an all weekend tournament with pool games on Friday and Saturday and then the winners of each pool and some Wild Card entries play in the tournament all day Sunday. There were 4 teams in each pool and 10 pools this year. You are guaranteed 3 pool games which determine seed and placement in the tournament and you must win 4 games in the tournament to win the championship. Notre Dame’s Navy, Southern Illinois’s Army and Virginia Tech were in our pools this year. We had a very competitive pool this year but we won all three games and won our first two in the tournament against San Diego and Marquette Navy. The games are all very competitive but there is a sense of camaraderie because every athlete knows that they will all be on the same team one day in the United States Military. Our best game was against Notre Dame’s Navy where we came back from being down 13 points at half time to winning by 4. Being a part of the basketball team is a great experience for ROTC cadets. It is a great team building opportunity where cadets practice their leadership skills they are being taught in the classroom. We practice everyday instead of going to PT but practices are very intense and the guys on the team take it very seriously. The team is driven down by a Cadre member and stays in a hotel for the weekend. We go out to eat on Saturday night for a team dinner. This is my third year on the team and I love it. I have so much fun and the guys on the team are really great.
