Speakers
Speakers for the Symposium are chosen to give attendees a wide range of perspectives on the life of a Navy Nurse. Speakers from all levels of Navy Nursing, ranging from nurses who graduated only a year or two ago to those who have made a career out of Navy Nursing, are present at each Symposium.
Below is an sample of some of speakers who spoke at the Symposium in Fall of 2008. This page will be updated with the speakers who will attend the Fall 2010 Symposium as we get closer to the event.

Dr. Margaret Faut Callahan is currently the Dean of Nursing here at Marquette University. Prior to joining the Marquette community, Dr. Faut Callahan was chair of adult health nursing and program director of the nurse anesthesia program at Rush. She earned both her master’s and Ph.D. at Rush and has served as an administrator at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago for more than 25 years. She was a member of the Rush University Board of Trustees and University Board of Overseers.
Callahan has researched and published extensively in the areas of palliative care; pain perception, assessment and management; stress in the perioperative patient; nursing and health systems approach to ambulatory care; and nurse anesthesia. A fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, National Academies of Practice and the Institute of Medicine Chicago, Callahan is the principal investigator of a National Institute of Health — National Cancer Institute study on "Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Education.
Captain Regina K. Mercado was commissioned through the direct accession program after graduation from the Ohio State University in 1986. She subsequently attended Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island, and after graduation reported to Naval Hospital Oakland, California. She served there as a staff nurse in the Intensive Care Unit until 1989.
In 1989, she transferred to Naval Hospital Okinawa where she served as staff nurse on the medical-surgical and pediatric ward and later in the Intensive Care Unit. Upon her transfer to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in 1991 she continued her work as a critical care nurse but was later assigned as a clinical nurse coordinator responsible for the orientation and training of nurses and corpsmen in 5 divisions.
From 1993 until 1996, Captain Mercado served as a nurse in the White House Medical Unit. She cared for the first and second families as well as White House staff and supported travel missions in advance of or accompanying the President and his staff.
In 1996, she was reassigned to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and served as a staff nurse and eventually the Department Head of the Pediatric clinic. From 1999 until 2001, Captain Mercado served at Naval Hospital Beaufort in a variety of roles from staff nurse in the Primary Care Clinic to the command case manager and eventually assumed the position of Department Head for Ambulatory Care. During this tour she obtained a Master of Arts in Human Resource Development from Webster University.
In 2001, she was selected to be the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief for Health Care Operations at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C., where she served until 2002. From 2002 until 2004, Captain Mercado returned to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and served as the Department Head for Population Health. During her tenure she became faculty and lectured on population health concepts and program implementation for Navy Medicine’s Clinic Management Course.
In 2004, Captain Mercado reported to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where she served as the assistant director and later assumed the director position in Health Care Operations until 2008.
Captain Mercado assumed her duties as Nurse Corps Career Planner at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, D.C. in May 2008.
Her personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars.
Captain Mercado is married to Colonel Leo Mercado, United States Marine Corps, and they reside in Fairfax, Virginia.
CDR Raymundo currently serving as Senior Nursing Manager, Division Officer, Intensive Care Unit Department, Naval Medical Center, San Diego, additionally he is the Critical Care Department Head for USNS T-AH 19 while at Full Operating Status (FOS) during the Pacific Partnership 08 Mission.
CDR Raymundo was born in Chicago, IL and raised in San Francisco, CA. A graduate of Mt. Eden High School, in Hayward California, he completed his Bachelors Science in Nursing at Saint Mary of The Plains College, Wichita, Kansas, followed by completion of a Masters, in Business Management, Webster’s University, St. Louis Missouri. He attended the Army Command and General Staff College completing Joint Military Education Phase I. Commissioned in the Nurse Corps in 1991, since that time he has served in a variety of positions throughout his Naval career:
1991-1993 completed Officer Indoctrination School, Newport RI, followed by his first tour at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Intensive Care Unit
1993-1995 he was attached to COMPHIBGRU 3 Fleet Surgical Team 5, and served on the USS Tripoli LPH 10 and USS Pelelieu LHA 5, participating in Operations in Somalia, Rwanda, and Iraq with the 15the Marine Expeditionary Unit.
1995-1996 he deployed in support of JTF 160 for Operational Sea Signal Supporting Marine Barracks Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Field Operations Medical Unit. Simultaneously he was named as Department Head of Emergency Medical Department/Field Operations Medical Unit, Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay.
1996-1998 served as Senior Nurse, Emergency Department USNH Newport, Rhode Island and assisted in the transition from Naval Hospital to Naval Ambulatory Care Clinic, Naval Health Care New England. He departed Newport 1 year early in lieu of his selection as White House Nurse.
1998-2000 was attached to the White House Military Office, The White House Medical Unit, Medical Intelligence and Protective Services Section, directly providing Global Joint Operations and Plans for Presidential support
2000-2002 served as Senior Nurse Manager, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan, Primary Care Unit, managing clinical services for both base and tenant air-wing commands. Additionally he managed all critical care medical evacuations originating from Yamaguchi Prefecture MCAS Iwakuni.
2002-2003 was selected to attend the US ARMY Command General Staff College residence program, for Field Grade 04 Officers, he completed his Joint Military Education Phase I, and Masters of Arts in Business Management
2003-2006 reported to USNH Naples Italy as Senior Nurses Manager, Emergency Medical Department, Emergency Medical Services, for Naples, Gaeta, and La Maddelena Italy. Additionally, he managed Critical Care Services for USNH Naples Italy serving all American and NATO forces in the area.
2006-(2009) is presently serving as the Division Officer and Senior Nurse Manager, for Medical, Cardiac and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units, Naval Medical Center San Diego. While deployed he is the Department Head Critical Care aboard the USNS Mercy TA-H 19 during the Pacific Partnership 2008 Mission.
CDR Raymundo holds professional certifications as a Critical Care Nurse, Emergency Room Nurse, and Registered Respiratory Therapist. He is married to Lorelei Raymundo who works as a Staff Physical Therapist.
Command Susan McCord is a native of Williamson, West Virginia. She graduated from Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing with a three year nursing Diploma in 1979.
She began her military career as an Army Reserve Nurse Officer from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, she became a direct accession Active Duty Navy Nurse Corps Officer, attending a six-week orientation at Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, RI before reporting to her first duty station at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA as a labor and delivery nurse. While stationed at Portsmouth, she was deployed on September 1, 1990 to Al Jubial, Saudi Arabia, serving six and a half months as an Assistant Division Officer at Fleet Hospital Five medical surgical ward during the Persian Gulf War. While deployed she was promoted to Lieutenant.
Upon return from deployment, Lieutenant McCord was selected as the Night Hospital Supervisor at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, VA and served in that capacity for eight months before being selected for Duty Under Instruction to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Science at Old Dominion University. Following graduation in August 1993, Lieutenant McCord received orders to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, CA where she served as the Division Officer, Family Practice Residency Clinic from 1993 to 1996. During this assignment, Lieutenant McCord completed the first of two graduated degrees, a Master’s of Health Administration.
While stationed at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Lieutenant McCord was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and received unaccompanied tour orders to Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 1996 to1998 and served as the Department Head, Professional Affairs and Performance Improvement. While stationed unaccompanied in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she earned her second graduated degree, a Master’s in Public Administration.
Lieutenant Commander McCord received follow on orders back to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA for 1998 to 2001 as the Division Head, Inpatient General Surgery and Orthopedic Wards. Lieutenant Commander McCord accepted orders to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, NC from 2001 to 2003 as the Division Officer, Multi-service Medical/Surgical Ward and Family Practice Residency Clinic. While assigned to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune she was deployed for six months to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Fleet Hospital 20 to serve as the Inpatient Detention Hospital Department Head.
While deployed, Lieutenant Commander McCord was promoted to the rank of Command. After returning from deployment and completion of orders at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, NC, Commander McCord received orders to report to Naval Hospital Pensacola, FL from 2003 to 2007 where she was hand selected to serve as the Associate Director, Medical Services. While stationed at Naval Hospital Pensacola, FL Commander McCord served as the interim Director, Medical Service for four months while the Director was deployed. In 2007, Commander McCord received her final set of Permanent Change of Station orders to Naval Service Training Command, Pensacola, FL, as the Medical Programs Officer. During her last two tours of duty in Pensacola, FL, Commander McCord completed the requirements for a Doctorate in Health Administration from the University of Phoenix.
Commander McCord has received four Navy Commendation Medals, three Navy Achievement Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, and an Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, as well as many other deployment and unit ribbons and medals.
