The Women and Peace Building Programme was developed in 1998 in an effort to empower unemployed Black women in the Eastern and Western Capes. Currently the programme works with women from the Western Cape townships of Mitchell's Plain and Khayelitsha. The programme has five stages of training and support for the female participants. The stages (selection and recruitment, soft skills training, hard skills training, community safety audit, and the implementation of a "mini project") help to educate, and therefore empower the women to be voices in and for their communities.
TESTIMONIALS
Katie Ainge
Fall 2006 South Africa Service Learning participant
My role in the programme is to interview a selection of 50 past and current participants, in order to evaluate its effectiveness. I have the opportunity to visit with the women in their homes and to record their stories. This experience has allowed me to become more fully aware of the different stressors and obstacles the women have in their individual lives by being able to meet with the women and talk to them on a very personal level. Once the interview process is finished, I will then compile a report depicting the successes and struggles the women have encountered. This report will be used to re-evaluate the programme and to apply for future funding.
