The Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Learning Community: Best Practices in Service Learning and Community-Based Research
Course Development and Course Enhancement Awards
The Service Learning Program, Manresa for Faculty in the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Institute for Urban Life are excited to announce the launch of the Scholarship of Engagement (SOE) Faculty Learning Community. The SOE Community will focus on best practices in service learning and community-based research. We are pleased to announce that the following faculty are members of the SOE Community for the 2010-2011 school year:
Full or part-time faculty chosen to participate in this community will receive either a $2,000 course development award for integrating service learning into a course that has not had a service learning component, or a $1,500 award for significantly enhancing the service learning/community-based research component of one of their existing service learning courses. Faculty will be required to participate in five SOE meetings throughout the semester including a two-day faculty workshop and community bus trip in May.
The goals of the Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Learning Community are to:
1.) Create a community of support and passion among faculty using service learning and/or community-based research in their courses. Faculty will work together to brainstorm, problem solve, and integrate service learning into their courses.
2.) Improve the quality and quantity of service learning courses at Marquette, by being intentional about the use of critical reflection, assessment, clear learning objectives, and strong mutually beneficial partnerships.
3.) Support the integration of community-based research as a model of service learning at Marquette, which is currently under utilized.
