Description of Agency/Activities: The Dominican Center for Women (DCW) partners with the Amani community to maintain and enhance a beautiful, stable, healthy, and safe neighborhood consisting of residents who are community-minded and are striving to be meaningfully educated and employed. DCW serves people living in poverty through direct service and systemic change and provides programming in three areas: Adult Education and GED Preparation; Housing; and neighborhood revitalization. DCW builds neighborhood capacity in the Amani neighborhood, block by block and neighbor by neighbor. These programs facilitate communication, resident engagement, leadership and neighborhood well-being.

Student Role at Agency: DCW is receptive to student interest. Students will work in one of the following areas depending upon the Service Learning course in which the student is enrolled.

Communications: MU students work on projects to improve general DCW communications, including brochures, social media profiles and website design.

Computer Tutoring: MU students work one-on-one with Amani residents to improve computer literacy and keyboarding skills as residents prepare for their GED tests. Classes are every Friday from 9:00am to 11:30am.

Research: MU students work with staff to research issues and best practices that address the ongoing foreclosures, safety, healthy food, and liquor licenses crises in the Amani neighborhood.
