Days/Hours of Volunteering: Students can find out specific days and times for service learning during the Service Learning Sign-Up Night.

Description of Agency/Activities: Hawley Environmental School i s a K through 5th grade Milwaukee Public school. It is one of the only environmental schools on Milwaukee. The fifth grade runs an aquaponics lab. It is a discovery based lab where students use inquiry based questions to understand the nature of aquaponics. Some of the topics discussed are, life cycles, nitrogen cycle, types of plants, types of vegetables and the water cycle. The lab needs to be tended to daily which includes testing the water for ammonia, nitrate and nitrogen levels, checking the temperature and checking on plants and fish. This is not only a learning lab for the classroom students but also any volunteers. Any and all experiences and ideas that they may have are welcomed.

Student Role at Agency:

Commitment/Requirements: Students must commit at least 2 hours a week in the aquaponics lab at Hawley Environmental School. They must be very punctual and be at the school at least 10 minutes before their shift for set up purposes. In the hour they will work with 4 different groups. They will work with the same students each time they are at Hawley. The student will get the same groups in order to build a relationship with the classroom students.
