By car: Drive West up W. Wisconsin. Take a left on 63th street. Take a right on Mt. Vernon (10 minutes)

By Bus: Take a #10 heading up W Wisconsin Ave toward Brookfield Sq. Depart at the intersection of N 64th Street & W Wisconsin Ave. Take a left and walk down N 64th St. (You will cross W Blue Mound Rd.) MacDowell is at the intersection of N 64th St. & W Mt Vernon Ave.

Description of Agency: MacDowell Montessori is a K3-12th grade public Montessori school located in the Bluemound Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee. MacDowell promotes concentration, practical life and problem-solving skills. Students integrate science, history, geography and the arts through lessons, projects and community experiences. Our high school program combines the Montessori philosophy with the International Baccalaureate program, which provides a rigorous curriculum for college preparation. MacDowell emphasizes the importance of productive community involvement and a humanistic worldview.

Student Role at Agency:

MU service learners can choose from the variety of activities/jobs below:

LITERACY TUTOR: The students from Marquette University will provide academic support to our 1st - 6th graders in reading. Service learners will provide supplemental reading support to students identified by the classroom teacher either one-on-one or in small groups in the school library.  Service learners will work with the students to develop vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Service learners must be comfortable reading aloud, learning basic literacy training techniques and be comfortable taking the initiative when working with small groups or individuals. Timing: flexible, during the school day from 8am-2pm

MATH TUTOR: The students from Marquette University will provide academic support to our 1st - 8th graders in mathematics. Service learners will provide supplemental math support to students identified by the classroom teacher either one-on-one or in small groups in the school library.  Math tutors may also be of service to advanced math students as identified by their teacher. Service learners must be comfortable taking the initiative when working with small groups or individuals. Timing: flexible, during the school day from 8am-2pm

STOCK MARKET CLUB: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 7-9th grade students in their Stock Market Club, which meets during the school day. The stock market club will take part in two 10 week simulations. The simulations use real time market data from the major US Capital Markets. Students receive “100,000” in credits to invest. The students may invest in individual stocks, mutual funds, bonds etc.  Service learners will assist with stock market simulations. They may also give presentations on economics and how markets function. Timing: approximately 11am-12pm, 2-3x a week (they meet every other day)

CHESS / GAME CLUB: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 7-9th grade students in their chess/game club, which meets during the school day. Service learners will mentor and play chess and other strategy games with high school students. Timing: approximately 11am-12pm, 2-3x a week (they meet every other day)

URBAN AGRICULTURE / SCIENCE: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 7-12 grade students in their urban agriculture class. Service learning students will assist with gardening in our raised beds, composting, aquaponics, building beds for our hoop house and planning and marketing for our annual plant sale. Timing: approximately 11am-12pm 2-3x a week (they meet every other day)

DIY / CRAFTS: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 7-8th grade students in their DIY/Crafts class. Service learners will assist with a variety of different do-it-yourself projects throughout the semester, which will be on sale to the greater MacDowell community. Service learning students may also assist with planning and marketing these sales. Timing: approximately 11am-12pm, 2-3x a week (they meet every other day)      

ROBOTICS: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 7-8th grade MacDowell students in their robotics class. Service learners will assist with building, programing and testing robotics technology as well as assist with writing programming code to create computer based games. They will also assist in designing and building programmable robots using motors, sensors, gears, wheels and axles, and other technical components. Timing: approximately 11am-12pm, 2-3x a week (they meet every other day)

4H: Marquette University students will be working closely with our 4H program which meets after school one day a week. Service learners will assist with knitting/crocheting, game club, legos and crafts. Timing: Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 2:30pm – 4:30pm
