North Division High School Tutoring/Mentoring Program

Transportation:

By car: Get on I-41/I-43 N. Follow I-41/I-43 to N 7th St. Take exit 74 from I-41/I-43. Take N 8th St to W Center St.

By bus: Take the # 12 going north. Get off at Teutonia and Center. Walk east about a block and a half to the school, which is on the south side of Center St.

Orientation: Thursday, February 9th at 4:00pm

Days/Hours of OperationStudents can find out specific days and times for service learning during the Service Learning Sign-Up Night. Students have traditionally done service learning on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.  There may be additional times tutors may be needed Monday-Friday during the school day 8:30 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.

Description of Agency/Activities:  North Division High School (NDHS) is a public school serving 550 students.  With the combined support of staff, parents/guardians and the community, the Mission of NDHS is to meet/exceed adequate yearly progress on all academic and non-academic state benchmarks.  NDHS is committed to providing academic excellence, while instilling morals and values that will create individuality by fostering a passion for learning within students.  NDHS values the uniqueness of each student and prepares students to succeed in their own lives while making positive contributions to society. In addition to regular high school course work, NDHS offers specialized cohorts of study in the areas of Health Sciences, Information Technology, and Welding.

Student Role at Agency:  The students from Marquette University will provide academic support primarily in the areas of reading and math. Tutors/mentors will be able to assist students one-on-one or in small group in reading, writing, and mathematics (3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.) in designated tutoring classrooms. Tutors/mentors will provide support to students by assisting with homework, establishing positive relationships, serving as positive role models and providing encouragement. Students can facilitate an after school program based on their interests.
