Transportation: Service Learners are encouraged to travel to/from their agency in pairs or groups.
By Bus: From the corner of 14th st. and Wisconsin Ave. take the #30 bus westbound (toward 30 Florist) for about 6 minutes. Exit at the 27th Street stop and transfer to the #27 bus from the intersection of 27th street and Wisconsin Ave. Take the #27 bus northbound (towards Hampton) for about 8 minutes/11 stops. Exit onto Brown street and walk east (right) on Brown for 2 blocks, then north (left) on 25th st. for one block. Starms Discovery Learning Center is located on the left.
Days/Hours of Operation:School hours are 9:00am-3:45pm. However, the afternoons work best for reading interventions since the subject is taught during that time. Student interested in working with children between 1st and 8th grade will be sent to the Discovering Learning main campus while students interested working with children between K3 and K5 will go to the 2616 W Garfield campus (walking distance from Discovery Learning campus)
Description of Agency: Francis Starms Discovery Learning Center is an MPS site that serves elementary and middle level students from the ages of 6 to 14 years old. The school is committed to excellence by providing a developmentally appropriate curriculum in an active learning environment with high expectations for all students to achieve success. Children of different abilities are groupned into multi-age family units and taught by teacher teams. our commitment is to promote academic and social growth in each child. We offer art, music, physical education and award-winning forensics.
Student Role(s) at Agency:
Commitment/Requirements: At least 2 hours a week for the duration of the semester. Consistent weekly attendance is necessary at this site. Students must serve through the week of December 5th. A completed Volunteer Application must be brought to orientation.
