Description of Agency/Activities: The Milwaukee French Immersion program began in 1978. In the immersion program, children acquire the second language in play and work situations where meaningful communication is desired. The curriculum is similar as it is for students in other MPS elementary schools. However, at French Immersion, the curriculum is taught almost entirely in French until grade two. At that point, English reading and language arts are introduced for 40 minutes each day. The percentage of classroom instruction in English increases each year until approximately twenty percent of the day is in English at grades four and five.

Students in K5 - 3rd grade are in classrooms limited to 15 pupils per teacher, and these smaller classes have proven to be very successful and instrumental in improving student achievement in all areas, including the acquisition of the language itself. Milwaukee French Immersion School teachers are certified in elementary education and are also fluent in spoken and written French.

Student Role in Agency: Service Learners are needed to assist in a classroom setting. Service Learners must be very proficient in spoken and written French, as Service Learners will be working with students in small groups assisting in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Commitment: 1-2 hours per week plus an initial orientation.
