Description of Agency: Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Refugee and Immigration Services works to resettle refugees in Southeast Wisconsin. Our goal is to help the refugee family become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community. LSS helps refugees achieve this goal by providing case management services, job placement and sponsorship assistance. LSS has welcomed families from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Burma, Georgia, Laos, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia and many other countries.

Student Role in Agency: Service learners will tutor newly arrived refugees in English language learning.  While there will be ample instructional materials provided to tutors, service learners will be free to develop original materials to assist those they are tutoring.  All throughout the term, service learners will become familiar with the refugee resettlement process.

Commitment: Students need to complete a background che3ck through the International Learning Center. Students will be registered as volunteers at ILC but serve at LSS. Students must volunteer 2 shifts per week to complete their 20 hours.

Orientation: Volunteers are asked to attend an orientation at the International Learning Center, located at 639 N. 25th St. Milwaukee, WI 53233. Students may choose any of the following orientation dates or schedule an individual orientation.

Monday, September 12th at 12:00pm
