Description of Agency/Activities: Tenor, which is Latin for “continuing momentum for the duration; a career,” is the first school of its kind in Milwaukee. Tenor High School offers students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and a Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) certificate in a specific area or concentration. With its career development focus, Tenor is designed to assist students as they prepare themselves for their future careers. The school also works to help students become better prepared employees by teaching skills in communication, math, science, problem solving, and critical thinking. Additionally, a strong work ethic is instilled into the students. From its brightly painted walls, carpeted floors, and students completely engaged in the classroom, Tenor provides a safe, comfortable, and protected environment that allows students to thrive. Small class sizes, dedicated teachers and administrators, and a focused curriculum allow students to experience both academic and personal success. From all-school assemblies featuring guest speakers, to classes in career exploration and professionalism, Tenor provides students with a wide range of learning experiences designed to ensure student success. Of the students at Tenor, 69% participate in the free or reduced lunch program and approximately 85% represent ethnic minorities.

Student Role in Agency:

PLEASE NOTE: Service Learners will not be matched with the student they will mentor until Mid-October. Please be sure that the Service Learning Requirements (i.e. Papers) for your course will not be due to your professor early in the semester. There will be several training sessions in late October and early September prior to your match that will count towards your course hours requirement.

Commitment: Following Orientation and Training, students working as Reading Program Assistants are asked to commit 2-3 hours. Students committing to the Mentoring Program are expected to complete all orientation and training sessions, and meet with their student at least 1 hour a week. Service Learners should be mindful of the hours commitment for their course, and may need to make arrangements with the site to serve additional hours if needed. Regular attendance is very important at this site. Thorough background checks will be conducted. Those agreeing to the one academic year commitment for the mentoring program will also be required to have a reference check. Mentoring is a very serious commitment. This site is looking for students that are dedicated and who will have time to work with these valuable young people. Please do not sign up for this placement unless you can definitely make the one year commitment.
