Welcome to Service Learning This web site was created to give you an overview of the Service Learning Program at Marquette University. Marquette is a Jesuit Catholic university located on the edge of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There are approximately 11,000 students (7,500 undergraduates) and 550 full-time faculty at Marquette.

As a Jesuit university, there is a strong focus on community service at Marquette. Service is one of the four pillars in the university's mission statement. It also holds an important place in the Jesuit credos of cura personalis ("care for the whole person") and "women and men for others." Each year Marquette students perform over 100,000 hours of service to the Milwaukee community. The Center for Community Service, located under Student Affairs, coordinates the majority of the student volunteer community service efforts. The Service Learning Program is a separate unit, housed within Academic Affairs.

Service Learning at Marquette has received enthusiastic support from higher administration. In a letter to faculty, university President Robert Wild, S.J. wrote:

"Service Learning represents what has always been central to the mission of Marquette University: a firm belief that each student on this campus should have the opportunity to grow and learn in the context of service to others. For the more than 700 students who participate in Service Learning each semester, and for those faculty who guide them through both an academic and a service experience, it is a unique and rewarding element of their time at this university."
