Letter From the Medical Director Re: H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)
August 26, 2009
Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome to Marquette University and the 2009-2010 academic year. During the summer, Marquette officials have worked closely with our state and local public health department partners to continually monitor the evolving H1N1 flu situation and be sure that campus preparations are underway. With the flu season approaching, it is anticipated that both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu cases will affect the Marquette community. While the flu may not be entirely prevented, there are important measures that can be taken to minimize its impact.
- Get vaccinated against seasonal flu.
Take advantage of the seasonal flu immunization that is very effective in preventing this annual strain of influenza. Upwards of 10 seasonal flu shot clinics will occur across campus beginning Oct. 1. Further information can be found at: www.marquette.edu/shs. At this time we do not have specific information about the availability of an H1N1 vaccination, but will communicate with campus as soon as these details become available.
- Take preventive actions to stop the spread of germs:
- Wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based cleaner, especially after you cough or sneeze.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your shirt sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Frequently clean your living quarters including surfaces such as doorknobs, refrigerator handles, computer keyboards, remote controls and countertops.
- Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- If you become sick with a flu-like illness, stay home from class, work and campus activities until your fever is gone. A flu-like illness is defined as a combination of fever with either cough or sore throat, often accompanied by body aches and fatigue.
- Have a plan in the event of illness. For most students, the best place to recuperate will be at home with parents and family. We understand that it may not be possible for all students to go home and will have plans for students who will be unable to leave campus.
- Keep yourself informed by reviewing the Marquette Student Health Service Web site. As the H1N1 flu situation continues to develop, the university will post updates or communicate with campus as needed.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Smith, M.D.
