Illness

People get sick no matter where they are in the world. Routine illnesses such as colds and the flu are common.

Some illnesses that can be produced by travel are of particular concern:

Gastrointestinal illness (especially diarrhea diseases)

Altitude sickness (usually benign, occasionally serious)

Infectious diseases

The risk of acquiring an infection varies greatly, depending on the country and region traveled to. Influenza, for example, is a problem in the southern hemisphere during our spring and summer and may be present throughout the year in the tropics.

Illness can also occur due to pre-existing health problems aggravated by travel (especially heart and lung conditions).

Post-travel illness can also occur. Diarrhea is the most common illness reported by travelers who have recently returned from other countries.
