Injuries
Like
many health problems, injuries are usually preventable.
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among
people
age 15 to 24, both in the United States and among U.S. citizens
traveling abroad. The mortality rate from injuries in this
age
group is almost three times higher among overseas travelers.
In a study of Peace Corps volunteer deaths, 70 percent were due to
unintentional injury. Motor vehicle accidents are the most common
cause of injury deaths and of emergency evacuation.
You may be at increased
risk of injury if:
you are exposed to or participate
in injury-prone activities
you are driving, walking
or swimming in unfamiliar environments
you are exposed to unfamiliar roadway
designs and traffic safety measures
there are inadequate
or no emergency medical services available
To prevent injury while traveling:
choose safe
rental cars
use helmets
and seat belts when available
travel in groups
rather than alone, especially at night
don't drink
and drive
don't drink
and swim
use life jackets
