Special Issues & Concerns
Rabies
Rabies is endemic in domestic animals in many countries and of
special concern for anyone traveling to the Indian subcontinent
or Southeast Asia. Pre-travel rabies vaccine may be needed, depending
on length of stay and probability of exposure due to long
stays
in rural areas and villages.
HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are much more
common in other countries than they are in the United States.
Some countries require an HIV test for entry or may require testing
to be done in-country; check with the country's consular office
for details. The U.S. State Department also maintains a list
of HIV test requirements.
Insects
Insects can be a major problem and carriers of disease such as yellow fever and
malaria in the tropics. Information about repellent use, netting
and other preventive measures are provided at the Travel Clinic.
Jet lag
Jet lag and culture shock are real problems for many travelers. They can also occur when travelers return to the United States.
Time often cures both problems, but consultation may also be helpful.
