Once the repayment period begins, you may be eligible for periods of deferment during which interest does not accrue on the loan balance, and repayment of principal is not required. Periods eligible for deferment status are listed in the deferment table below.
Deferment forms must be completed and filed at least once a year and are the responsibility of the borrower. In some instances, a deferment form may be required each semester. Deferments are granted on a closed-ended basis, which is to say that they are granted for a set period of time based on the time-frame verified by the the institution you currently attend. They are NOT automatically renewed. The deferment form must be certified by the university registrar, commanding officer, employer, physician or Peace Corps officer, as applicable.

Upon termination of deferment status, you may be entitled to a new grace period during which interest does not accrue and payment is not required.
Note: Past due Bursar's balances do not qualify for deferment.
Effective October 7, 1998, several new categories of deferments are available to older Perkins Student Loans. Check the chart below or call the Office of Student Loan Accounts for information regarding these new deferments.
