History and purpose

The Balchunas Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Jay Balchunas, who graduated from Marquette with a bachelor's degree in Criminology & Law Studies in 1995.


Jay served first with Marquette University as a Public Safety Officer, then as a police officer for seven years with the Milwaukee Police Department. On October 29, 2004, at the age of 34, while working as Senior Special Agent for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, Jay was tragically killed during an attempted robbery.


In honor of their son's passion and dedication for law enforcement, starting in 2006 and each year thereafter the Balchunas Scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior CRLS student who plans a career in law enforcement.


Selection criteria: 

    - Criminology and Law Studies major

    - Junior or senior standing

    - Demonstrated financial need

    - An interest in a career in law enforcement


Deadline: Third Monday of September of each year
