The Jay Balchunas Memorial Scholarship

The Balchunas Memorial Scholarship was established by Don and Mary Kay Balchunas in memory of their son Jay Balchunas, who graduated from Marquette with a bachelor's degree in Criminology & Law Studies in 1995. Jay served first with Marquette University as a Public Safety Officer, then as a police officer for seven years with the Milwaukee Police Department. Jay also simultaneously served on the New Berlin Fire Department for 18 years. But on October 29, 2004, at the age of 34, while working as Senior Special Agent for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, Jay was tragically shot during an attempted robbery. Unfortunately, following a courageous fight, Jay succumbed to his wounds one week later. In honor of their son's passion and dedication for law enforcement, starting in 2006 and each year thereafter the Balchunas Scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior or senior CRLS student who plans a career in law enforcement. The recipient is awarded a scholarship and a certificate.
