Criminology as a Career

There are a number of careers in the criminal justice field. Some careers require specialized academic or career training.

Law Enforcement

Municipal police officer; sheriff's deputy; state trooper; detective (municipal, county, state); postal inspector; air safety investigator; federal special agent or inspector (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; Customs; Secret Service; Immigration and Naturalization; Internal Revenue Service; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Drug Enforcement Agency; U.S. Marshals); police intelligence support analyst.

Courts

Attorney; baliff; court administrator; court clerk; court liaison; counselor domestic violence counselor; judge; paralegal/legal assistant; pre-trial service officer; victim services personnel; crisis counselor; child and youth counselor.

Corrections

Correctional treatment specialist; correctional counselor; corrections officer; probation and parole officer (juvenile and adult); warden; clinical psychologist; vocational and educational counselors; substance abuse treatment specialist; classification and treatment directors.
